Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC)
Mission Statement: To enhance the total student-athlete experience by developing student-athlete leadership skills, promoting student-athlete welfare and fostering a positive student-athlete image on the Southern Wesleyan University campus, local community, state and national levels. We sponsor and organize community service activities. We increase community awareness and support of intercollegiate athletics in the Central and Clemson communities.
SWU SAAC Committee Charges:
Southern Wesleyan's chapter of SAAC is divided into three sub committees in order to better support student athletes and make an impact in the Central and Clemson’s communities. Members of SAAC have focused their efforts on Student-Athlete Academic Support, Mental Health, and Community Service.
Academic Support: This Committee is charged with focusing their efforts on providing academic support to other student athletes. They facilitate helpful workshops that help student-athletes build the skills they need in order to be academically successful. They also model good study habits consistently and act as peer mentors for their teammates.
Mental Health: This committee is charged with focusing their efforts on providing mental health support to their fellow student-athletes. This committee facilitates monthly support groups that help student athletes focus on their mental health needs. They act as advocates for the mental aspect division II of collegiate athletics. In addition to hosting support groups, they also refer student-athletes to the counseling center and athletics department for mental health emergencies.
Community Service: This Committee is charged with focusing their efforts being serving both Central and Clemson’s community. These student athletes act as servant leaders and address the needs of their surrounding environment. They organize donation drives, and value helping others on and off the field, court, and campus.
Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Constitution
Name: The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is a committee composed of student-athlete representatives for their particular sport. The name of the committee shall be Southern Wesleyan University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, abbreviated "SWU-SAAC".
Purpose: The purpose of the SWU-SAAC is to make known the student-athlete voice and to encourage an exchange of ideas and resources within the campus. Also promoting student-athlete welfare and fostering a positive student-athlete image on the SWU campus, local community, state and national levels.
Membership: The membership of the SWU-SAAC is composed of one representative (and an alternate) from each sport. Each member serves as a liaison between the committee and his or her sport. Membership in this committee is a responsibility. Dedication and participation are necessary to maintain membership. Nominations for SWU-SAAC representatives may vary among teams. Coaches and/or student-athletes should be part of the nomination process to ensure the representative is well respected within the respective team and will be responsible for bringing back information to his or her team.
Article IV: Sub-Committees
SWU-SAAC members will be divided into three sub-committees: Academic Support, Community Service, and Mental Health. Students will select their top committee choices and be assigned to one of their committees at the beginning of every semester. Students who do not select a committee may be assigned to one by SWU-SAAC Advisors. Should it become necessary students may be elected in committee leadership positions to help organize committee work.
Article V: Executive Board Officers and Committee Leadership
Officers: At this time SWU-SAAC does not have an executive board. Should an executive board be established students will be elected into leadership roles and committee leadership positions.
Article VI: Meetings
Section 1: The SWU-SAAC will meet once per month at a time and place a convenient to a majority of the members. Additional meetings may be called by a majority of the officers when necessary. The campus SAAC liaison can also call a meeting if he or she desires.
Section 2: All representatives must attend every meeting unless there is a legitimate excuse. Any unexcused absence will result in a loss of the vote for the absent representative’s sport team. An excused absence will have no consequences.
Section 3: Three (3) unexcused absences will result in dismissal from the committee. Upon this, a new representative will be selected.
Article VII: Advisors
Advisors: SWU-SAAC will be led by 2 advisors. One Advisor should be a representative from Southern Wesleyan's Athletics Department and the other may be a graduate student or intern. Advisors will guide and help facilitate SWU-SAAC events and projects. The Advisors will work together to provide support for members of SAAC.
