Warriors Unable to Hold onto First Half Lead

Central, SC – Southern Wesleyan fell to the University of Mount Olive Trojans on Saturday afternoon in a 77-66 final score.

The Warriors shot 46.9% from the field and 45.5% from the three point line in the loss to the Trojans on Saturday.  Three Warriors posted double digits, with Zalan Richards leading the team with 15 points.  Richards was followed by Jeremy Wert with 12 and Lamont Smith with 11.  The Warriors had 18 assists with Jalen Lowery leading the team with five and Diego Poore following closely with four.  Lamont Smith and Wert had the lone steals of the game.  Southern Wesleyan posted 27 rebounds with Richards and Wert each leading the team with eight.

How It Happened

The University of Mount Olive Trojans attacked first on Saturday afternoon, taking a 2-0 lead on a layup by Alan Treakle.  A three point jump shot by Lamont Smith allowed the Warriors to tie the game at five before a layup by Tanner Poole allowed the Trojans to regain a 7-5 point advantage.  Southern Wesleyan continued to fight as Lamont Smith and Diego Poore made back-to-back three point shots to put the Warriors on top 13-7.  Southern Wesleyan continued to push ahead as Jacob Smith and Lamont Smith made a three point shots to put the Warriors lead at 21-14.  Layups by Jeremy Wert, Jalen Lowery and Zalan Richards put the Warriors ahead of Mount Olive 35-19.  Despite a three point shot by Jonathan Mebane, the Warriors remained on top 39-28 at half.

Diego Poore kicked off the second half for the Warriors with a three point shot to give them a 42-28 point advantage.  The University of Mount Olive would not let that stop them as Jamaal Martin made a jump shot to put the Trojans within twelve points.  The Warriors maintained control of the game with a layup by Jeremy Wert to make the score 49-36, but the Trojans countered with a layup by Alan Treakle to come to within ten points and make the score 40-50.  Mount Olive continued to edge closer to Southern Wesleyan as Jonathan Mebane made a jump shot to make the score 48-53.  The Trojans took the lead on a layup by Michael Brown, and went on to win the game in a 77-66 final score.


What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will next travel to Anderson, SC to take on the Anderson Trojans on December 19 at 4 p.m.  They will then take part in a two week Christmas break before returning to Historic Tysinger Gymnasium on January 2 to take on Catawba at 4 p.m.  They will remain at home on January 5 as they host the Barton Bulldogs at 4 p.m.
