Wilson, NC – Southern Wesleyan dropped the first Conference Carolinas game of the season in an intense battle against the Barton Bulldogs.
The Warriors recorded 28 kills in the loss to the Bulldogs. Darby Sheets led the team with seven. She was followed by Olivia Johnson with five. Kali Letcher posted 17 of the 28 assists in the loss. Southern Wesleyan recorded six service aces, with Sheets and Johnson leading the team with two apiece. The Warriors posted 44 digs during the match, with Anna Martin leading the team with 15. The Warriors had six total blocks with Johanna Philyaw posting three of them.

How It Happened
Southern Wesleyan took the early lead as Darby Sheets took a pass from Kali Letcher to put down a kill. They extended their lead off a service ace by Sarah Stone. However, the Bulldogs challenged right back, tying the game with kills by Allison Gambill and Sarah Kirk. The Bulldogs and Warriors continued to battle back and forth several times, exchanging the lead on several occasions. The Warriors regained the lead on attack errors by Barton. Sarah Stone helped the Warriors retain the lead as her block prevented Allison Gambill's attack from landing. Kills by Ashlyn Holford and Sheets put the Warriors ahead 21-16. However, Barton fought back coming to 24-20 behind Southern Wesleyan on a kill by Kaytlin Elkins. The Bulldogs went on to win the first set 26-24.
The Warriors took the first point of the second set. A kill by Sarah Stone allowed the Warriors to remain in striking distance of the Bulldogs. Southern Wesleyan continued to pressure Barton with kills by Danairi Malave, Darby Sheets and Olivia Johnson to tie the game 7-7. However, the Bulldogs continued to push ahead of the Warriors, taking a 9-7 lead on kills by Allison Gambill. Kills by Johanna Philyaw and Sheets allowed the Warriors to take an 18-17 point advantage. An ace by Sheets put Southern Wesleyan up by three, however Barton countered quickly to come to 21-19 behind the Warriors. Barton fought back, winning the second set 27-25.
Barton took an early lead, but kills by Johanna Philyaw, Danairi Malave and Katlyn Von Ins allowed Southern Wesleyan to tie the third set 3-3. The Bulldogs continued to challenge the Warriors, but a service ace by Darby Sheets allowed Southern Wesleyan to take a 5-4 point advantage. Despite a kill by Philyaw, Barton pushed ahead to take a 12-10 point lead. Kills by Kaytlin Elkins allowed the Bulldogs to push ahead to a 14-10 point advantage. Amber Bass laid down a kill to make the score 12-17, but the Bulldogs quickly countered with a kill by Gambill to regain an 18-12 point lead. Barton went on to win the final set 25-19.
Southern Wesleyan will remain on the road as they travel to Murfreesboro, NC to take on the Chowan Hawks on September 28 at 2 p.m. They will then host their home opener on September 30 as they welcome the Bob Jones Bruins at 7 p.m. They will remain at home on October 1 as they welcoming the King Tornado at 7 p.m.
