How It Happened

Set One

The Warriors scored first in the contest on Saturday afternoon off of a Chowan hitting error. A kill from Kali Letcher put the Warriors up 2-0. The Hawks responded with three unaswered points, forcing the Warriors to play catch up. Southern Wesleyan was able to tie it up before the Hawks went on a 7-0 run to take a 12-6 lead. A Chowan serving error allowed the Warriors to break the run. However, the Hawks continued to push with strings of points throughout the end of the first set. The Warriors threatened with kills from Darby Sheets and Danairi Malave but fell to the Hawks 25-14 in set one.

Set Two

In the second set, the Hawks struck first with a kill from Ann-Marie Johnson. Chowan errors and kills from Olivia Johnson put the Warriors ahead 9-7 before a run of points allowed the Hawks to take a 12-9 lead. Amber Bass put on a strong performance with three kills to put the Warriors with two. Kills from Johnson tied the score and lifted the Warriors ahead 21-17. Southern Wesleyan was able to push ahead and take the second set in a 25-19 final.

Set Three

Southern Wesleyan took an early 4-2 lead in set three, but the Hawks came back to tie it up at 5-5. A 6-0 run dug a deep hole for the Warriors, as they trailed 11-6. Kills from Johnson threatened, but the Hawks remained ahead by at least two. A 3-0 and a 4-0 run late in the third set was enough for the Hawks to win 25-16.

Set Four

A kill from Johanna Philyaw put the Warriors on the board first in the fourth set. Sheets extended that lead to 2-1 with a kill of her own. Chowan tied it up at 3-3 and then had six unanswered points forcing a Southern Wesleyan time-out. Hawks errors allowed the Warriors to have the momentum for a moment and lessened the lead to 11-7. Kills from Philyaw and Bass should grit from the Warriors, but they were unable to produce anymore offense. The Hawks won set four 25-12.
