Saints Defeat Warriors

Central, S.C. - Southern Wesleyan fell to the Limestone Saints in a 3-0 final on Friday evening. 


The Warriors posted 20 kills in the loss to the Saints. Olivia Johnson led the team with 11 kills. Darby Sheets tallied eight assists along with Kali Letcher's seven. Southern Wesleyan had 37 digs with Katlyn Von Ins contributing 13 of them. Jesse Soles followed Von Ins with 10 digs. Three Warriors had service aces and there were three team blocks.

How It Happened

Set One

The Saints struck first in the contest with a kill from Madysen Williams. The Warriors responded with a kill from Olivia Johnson. Another kill from Johnson along with attack errors from the Saints put the Warriors on top 7-6. After a Limestone kill, the Saints held the Warriors to three kills as they took a 17-11 lead, forcing a SWU time-out. Amber Bass produced a kill out of the time-out before the Saints would score six unanswered points. A late kill from Danairi Malave wasn't enough as the Saints took the first set 25-14.

Set Two

Again in set two, the Saints scored first taking a 4-0 lead. The Warriors first earned point would come from a kill from Johnson to cut the lead to 10-3. Unforced errors from Limestone would allow SWU back in the game and a kill from Ashlyn Holford put the Warriors down only 15-11. The Saints made runs of points, while also contributing to the Warriors points with errors. Johnson had a late kill to put the Warriors at 15, but the Saints would go on to close the set with a 25-16 win.

Set Three

The third set was no different with the Saints claiming a 4-0 lead to start. Kills from Darby Sheets and Johnson closed the gap with the Warriors trailing only 5-4. Limestone would earn a string of six points before Southern Wesleyan responded with four of their own to trail 15-11. Another run of points for the Saints forced a SWU time-out. A spark out of the time-out contributed to a 3-0 run and two kills from Johnson. The Saints would go on to win set three 25-18 off of a kill from Vanessa Blas.


What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will host the Converse Valkyries on October 12 at 2 p.m. They will then welcome Elizabeth City State to town on October 14 at 7 p.m.
