Warriors Put Up Impressive Numbers to Take Down Vikings in First Home Win

Central, S.C. - Southern Wesleyan claimed the first home win of the season with a 3-1 win over the Elizabeth City State University Vikings on Monday evening.

The Warriors put up big numbers on Monday evening as they took down the ECSU Vikings. With a total of 57 kills, four Warriors claimed double digits. Led by Olivia Johnson, who had a double-double on the night with 17 kills and 13 digs, Darby Sheets and Amber Bass followed with 11 kills, and Sarah Stone added in 10, respectively. Kali Letcher contributed 23 assists along with Hadley Smith's 20 assists. The Warriors produced 67 digs on the defensive side of things. Along with Johnson, Jesse Soles added 17 digs, followed by Anna Martin with 11 digs. From the service line, 10 service aces were dished out with two team blocks.

How It Happened

Set One

The Vikings struck first in the contest on Monday evening with a kill from Asia Jones. The Warriors responded with kills from Darby Sheets, Ashlyn Holford, and Olivia Johnson to take a 5-3 lead. The Vikings regained the lead before the Warriors came back to tie it at 9-9 and again at 12-12. Four unanswered points would position the Warriors ahead of the Vikings 15-12. ECSU made their own run to go up 17-15. Kills from Sheets and Sarah Stone closed in on the Vikings lead, but ESCU was able to escape set one with a 25-21 win.

Set Two

In set two, Sheets made the first kill on a set from Kali Letcher. Kills from Johnson lifted the Warriors to a 7-2 lead. After a 6-0 run from the Vikings, Stone produced three kills to put the Warriors back in the game. Together, five kills and two service aces from Southern Wesleyan tied the game at 17-17. Ashlyn Holford, Johnson, and Stone put the Warriors ahead at 21-18. Attack errors from the Vikings gave the Warriors their last few points. Southern Wesleyan won set two 25-19.

Set Three

A 5-1 run kicked off the third set for the Warriors. While the Warriors kept the momentum going, they held the Vikings to a .188 hitting percentage. Southern Wesleyan was able to make runs of points that would build the Warriors confidence. Back-to-back kills from Sheets put the Warriors ahead 15-8. Johnson extended the lead with a solid performance at the net to situate the Warriors on top 21-12. The Vikings threatened late in the third set, but the Warriors would go on to win 25-17.

Set Four

Amber Bass and Sheets answered quickly in set four, establishing the Warriors momentum early on. A serving run of 7-0 from Anna Martin would put the Warriors up 9-1. The Vikings attempted to get their offense going, but the Warriors shut them down with another run of seven points to lead 19-7. Two service aces from Jesse Soles would extend that lead to 23-9. Again, at the end of the fourth set the Vikings threatened, but kills from Holford and Bass would close the match and the set with a 25-13 victory.

Southern Wesleyan will hit the road to take on the King Tornado on October 18 at 7 p.m. They will then play at Lees-McRae on October 19 as they take on the Bobcats at 12 p.m.
