How It Happened
The Flying Fleet scored first in the contest on Saturday afternoon, but the Warriors countered with an attack from Olivia Johnson. The Fleet was able to take the lead before successful attacks from Sarah Stone and Amber Bass were delivered to even the score at 6-6. A service ace from Darby Sheets would keep the Warriors within one, trailing 9-8. Erskine would continue to be successful from the service line and the net by limiting the Warriors to only two more kills. A late attack from Stone would not be enough as the Flying Fleet won set 25-14.
Southern Wesleyan claimed the first point of the second set on an error from Erskine. An early run from the Warriors would put them ahead 5-3 after kills from Johnson and Danairi Malave. The Fleet would make several runs of points throughout a remainder of the set as the Warriors were able to score mostly from Erskine errors. An impressive 8-0 run at the end of the set would situate the Fleet on top 23-10. Ashlyn Holford provided a kill for Southern Wesleyan, but the Fleet closed the match with a 25-11 win.
The Warriors jumped out with authority in the third set, taking a quick 5-2 lead. Errors from the Fleet provided a more cushioned lead as Bass and Johnson lifted the Warriors ahead 15-10. Erskine would threaten with a run of four points to tie it at 16-16, but Southern Wesleyan answered their run with one of their own. A kill from Johnson followed by a kill from Stone would put the Warriors ahead 19-16. The Warriors would finish the third set with an exclamation point from Bass and Johnson as they put the set away with a 25-19 win.
A 2-0 start from Southern Wesleyan would give them the momentum to carry their lead well into the fourth set. Johnson and Stone led the way as they put the Warriors on top 7-6. The Fleet pushed, but Holford extended the Warriors lead to 12-10. A string of six points followed by six more would shift the momentum into the Fleet's advantage as they clinged to a 21-13 lead. Another kill from Katlyn Von Ins and a service ace would do it for the Warriors. Erskine would take set four 25-17 to win the match.
